The new wave of on-device AI chips, explained

Every major chipmaker now ships a dedicated AI accelerator. Here's what that actually buys you.

A few years ago, “AI chip” meant a data-center accelerator the size of a textbook. Now it means a few square millimeters tucked into your phone, laptop, or earbuds — quietly running speech models, photo processing, and translation without ever touching the cloud.

Why on-device matters

On-device inference is faster, works offline, and keeps raw audio and images off a server somewhere. The tradeoff is model size: these chips run smaller, more efficient models than their cloud counterparts, which is why your phone's AI features sometimes feel a step behind a full chatbot.

  • Lower latency — no round trip to a server
  • Works without a network connection
  • Keeps sensitive data local by default
  • Limited by on-device power and memory
